Raja Sitaram Roy (born 1658 AD) was the zamindar of this region during the Mughal period. He at one point declared himself an independent king and stopped paying tribute to the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Muhammadpur was named after the local Muslim fakir Muhammad Shah instead of the old name of his capital Baghjan, while Muhammadpur was named after the Sufi saint Muhammad Ali Shah. Others believe that Sitaram named the capital Muhammadpur after the great preacher of Islam, Muhammad (PBUH), to entertain his Muslim subjects.
